My research interests are systematics, life histories, morphology, ecology and natural products from Caribbean marine algae. Present research involves study of secondary metabolites of algae which display biological activity. Role that these compounds play in the physiology of the organisms that produce them and the environmental control of their synthesis are topics currently under investigation. Other activities include study of macro cyanophyte and chlorophyte blooms which are negatively impacting inshore seagrass beds in the region of La Parguera (southwest Puerto Rico). I am presently coordinating the marine algal flora section of the New York Botanical Garden's "Flora of the Greater Antilles". Along with Dr. Nilda Aponte, we have recently completed A Revised Checklist of the Marine Algal Flora of Puerto Rico. |
